Even as adults, we love to swing when we visit the playground. But as a kid, it holds a special attraction as we swing ever higher and eventually jump from the apex of our upward swing to see if we can go farther than we did before.
And for a brief moment, we have a sense of weightlessness and flight that prompts us to believe we possess the powers manifested by the superheroes we venerate. Then we land not as far from the swing as we had hoped, and we return to reality. But we quickly overcome that momentary gloom, and get back on the swing to do it all over again.
What boy wouldn’t be a little bit excited when he views this reminder of the fun experienced at the playground — he’s once again soaring into the sky and leaping off for a momentary glimpse of what it would be like to be a superhero.
